Kajiado County Public Participation Forum

The National Council for Population and Development held a public Participation forum on the revision of the Population Policy for National Development (PPND) in Kajiado County. The meeting brought together over 50 Stakeholders who were drawn from both public (National and County Government Departments), Non-Governmental Organizations, Faith Based Organizations, Special Interest Groups and Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization with an aim of getting County specific population issues that affect Kajiado County. The Forum was graced by the Kajiado County Commissioner Mr. Joshua Nkanatha and the Assistant County Commissioner Kajiado Central Mr. Hanniel Kuria. The NCPD Board was represented by Ms Jacinta Mutegi, while the management was represented by the Director of Corporate Services (DCS) Mrs. Margaret Mwangi.

 

In his Opening Remarks the County Commissioner noted that in Kajiado county majority of the population are youths aged ( aged below 35 years) and there was need to invest in the youthful population age structure so as to sustain development in Kajiado county. He further noted concern that the life expectancy was low and majority were not leaving beyond 65 years. He emphasized on the need for support systems for the elderly so as to ensure people are able to live longer and a more quality life.

The deliberations focused on the five thematic areas addressed in the draft Population policy and were categorised into Population Health; fertility; Age structure; Migration & urbanization and Human settlement. The discussions involved participants giving challenges, opportunities, and solutions to the challenges and stating whether technology and innovation has been embraced in the specific issues raised in the thematic areas.
