17TH INTERNATIONAL INTER-MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE
The Partners in population and development (PPD) held a virtual conference – the 17th International Inter-Ministerial Conference on South-South Cooperation in Population and Development on 8th December, 2020. The conference was jointly organized by Partners in Population and Development (PPD), the National Health Commission of China (NHC) and UNFPA. The main theme of the conference is Nairobi Commitments and the 2030 Agenda: taking stock and looking ahead in post COVID-19 crisis.
The main objective of the conference was to advocate and ensure political support and investment to address the effects of COVID-19 pandemic in the achievement of the Three Zeros by 2030 through promoting South-South and triangular cooperation.
Speaking during the conference, the director general for the National Council for Population and Development Dr. Sheikh Mohamed highlighted that Kenya has made progress towards the commitments made during the Nairobi summit on icpd25 held in Kenya in 2019. He marked the country has developed a national Action Plan for the implementation of the seventeen commitments it made to advance the ICPD PoA specifying the key activities that will be implemented by Kenya over the period 2020 to 2030.
Dr. Sheikh added that the implementation of the Kenya Country Commitments during the course of 2020 has been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya. He added that Kenya moves forward with implementation of the commitments, one key activity will be the domestication of the country commitments to the county level so that the same can be integrated in the County Integrated Development Plans.
The conference called on the member countries and relevant stakeholders to ensure sustainable financing in SSC for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health programmes by 2030, for fulfilling the Nairobi Summit commitments and accelerating the implementation of MCH and RH-related SDGs, and make sure that no one is left behind in these challenging and critical times.
